How the use of a mouthwash can keep the smile healthy
- Posted on: Oct 30 2019
At Sullivan Dental Center, we know how important it is to maintain a healthy smile. Not only is a healthy smile free from decay and disease, but it is also beautiful! When patients ask the team about oral health care, they may forget to ask about the importance of mouthwash.
Why use mouthwash?
Mouthwash, or “mouth rinse,” can be used each day to take one step further after brushing and flossing the teeth. While it should not be used as a replacement for daily brushing and flossing, it can be used to provide added protection to oral health. When integrated into one’s routine, it can help:
- Prevent tooth decay
- Control tooth decay
- Reduce plaque
- Prevent/reduce gingivitis
- Reduce tartar formation
- Freshen the breath
Mouthwash is typically used after brushing and flossing. The ingredients in mouthwash will vary depending on the type of mouthwash used. Some are made to be therapeutic, offering active ingredients made to kill bacteria and reduce cavities, plaque, and tartar. The dentist may even write a prescription for a specialized mouthwash for addressing more severe dental concerns. Some are considered more “cosmetic,” and are designed to control bad breath. These mouthwashes are not often used for reducing risks of decay or disease.
How do I know which mouthwash to buy?
Shopping the oral care aisles at your local drugstore may feel overwhelming. There are so many choices in mouthwash that patients may be confused as to where to start. Patients seeking a mouthwash that is designed to reduce the risk of decay and disease will want to look for products that have the American Dental Association Seal of Acceptance. These products have been tested and verified by dental organizations to ensure they are effective and safe for patient use.
