Holistic Dentistry: A Natural Approach to a Healthier Smile!
- Posted on: Sep 30 2019
When patients hear the words “holistic dentistry,” they may not really be sure as to what this field of dental work entails. However, patients who learn about this alternative approach to oral health are often excited to participate in it! Holistic dentistry encompasses not only your oral health, but the health of your entire body. Our dentists, including Drs. Frank Sullivan, Clay Couvillon, and Candice Sullivan, are pleased to take care of the patient as a whole, not just the smile!
At Sullivan Dental Care, we take a different approach to many traditional areas of dentistry. Below are a few examples of the areas in which holistic dentistry may vary from traditional dentistry:
- Fluoride use. Most dental practices will provide fluoride treatments or recommend special fluoride products. However, there has been no scientific proof that the use of fluoride actually helps in preventing cavities. Fluoride is a poison to the human body, and because of this, our practice avoids the use of fluoride.
- Root canal therapy. Mainstream dental offices may use root canal therapy to save a tooth that has become diseased or infected. Holistic dentists avoid these procedures because of the increased risk of bacteria entering into the tooth and being transferred to other areas of the mouth and body.
- Mercury use. Silver amalgam fillings have been used for many years in fillings. Unfortunately, these fillings have a high rate of mercury, a toxic metal substance. Our practice avoids the use of silver amalgam fillings, and also provides safe and effective removal and replacement for patients who request it.
- Nutrition for preventative care. Many patients are unaware of how the foods they eat can damage or improve their oral health and wellness. Our dental staff provides patient education on the foods and beverages to enjoy or avoid for better dental health.
