More Reasons to Ban Mercury from your Mouth
- Posted on: Aug 15 2017
The number one priority at Sullivan Dental Center is our patients’ health and wellbeing. It is with this in mind that we have accrued a focused menu of services. We are proud to be an amalgam-free office. Our patients do not encounter amalgam and therefore are protected from the potential hazards of mercury. The only existence of mercury in our office is when we are meticulously removing amalgam fillings to replace them with a safer, more attractive substance.
Let’s Back Up
We aren’t here to promote our avoidance of mercury in dentistry, though this is one of the reasons patients seek us out. What we want to discuss today is why so many people are interested in making the switch from amalgams to mercury-free fillings. If a filling is in place, and it seems fine, why would anyone go to the extreme of having it removed? There is a good reason.
Professional dental organizations warn consumers to take good care of teeth and gums. Without proper care, inflammation associated with periodontal disease could develop. Coupled with unruly bacteria, this inflammation poses a risk for numerous medical conditions, including osteoporosis, hard-to-manage diabetes, heart disease, and cancers of the pancreas, kidneys, and blood. This association can sound frightening, and certainly, make you want to be better about brushing and flossing.
What is ironic about this warning from an organization like the American Dental Association is that the same conditions mentioned above have also been associated with mercury; mercury, the very substance that makes up approximately half of an amalgam filling.
The Value of Data
It can be difficult to believe that something as helpful as a dental filling could potentially harm health. Data from the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology demonstrates that removing amalgams and their mercury from the mouth can significantly impact general wellness. In one study of 1,569 patients’ subjective reports, it was found that amalgam removal led to relief from:
- Anxiety and depression
- Chronic fatigue
- Frequent stomach-upset and other GI complaints
- Unhealthy blood pressure
There is value in information such as this. However, the greatest value is experiencing optimal health and wellness for yourself. Learn more about our protocol for the safe removal of amalgam fillings. Call our St. Francisville office at 225-635-4422.
