What is cosmetic dentistry?
Cosmetic dentistry is a term that describes services that enhance the appearance of the smile. Sullivan Dental Center is proud to offer cosmetic services that complement the overall oral and general health of each of our patients. Various treatments may be considered to correct abnormalities or damage utilizing lifelike materials and techniques that achieve a natural-looking result.
Dental crowns have historically been used to repair teeth that have been extensively damaged. Initially, crowns were made of gold. These caps fitted over teeth then transitioned to metal alloy as a more affordable option. Today, the majority of dental crowns placed into patients’ smiles are made with a porcelain overlay at the very least. Crowns may be made of a variety of materials, but tend to blend in with the smile much more than older versions of restorative fixtures.
Due to the lifelike appearance of the acrylic or porcelain material of dental crowns, this treatment is very rewarding even when necessary to repair dental damage. Natural-looking crowns may be used to correct poorly-shaped teeth, repair extensive decay, replace large fillings, or to close gaps between teeth. Crowns are also a common method of repairing chips and tooth fractures.
A dental bridge is a restorative fixture that fills a gap that results from tooth loss. The bridge looks like a short row of artificial teeth. The teeth on the ends of the bridge are crowns. These are affixed to two natural teeth. In between is what we call a pontic, an artificial tooth made of porcelain or composite material. Affixed to natural teeth, the bridge is stabilized for normal chewing.
Dental bonding is a direct veneer process that can be used to disguise minor abnormalities or damage. The single-visit treatment involves slight etching of the damaged tooth. A composite material that matches surrounding enamel is then applied to the front surface of the tooth. This material may cover a chip, small crack, or stain. The composite is adhered (bonded) to the tooth with light and can be expected to last several years with good care.
Tooth replacement treatment now often includes the placement of one or more dental implants. These fixtures are situated beneath the gums where they will never be seen. The entire purpose of this tiny titanium post is to stabilize one or more artificial teeth. The multi-step treatment can take several months from beginning to end. However, the results of implant placement can last a lifetime. Furthermore, patients appreciate the degree of function they obtain with implants. Due to the stability of artificial teeth secured onto implant posts, chewing, speaking, and smiling all look and feel nearly 100 percent normal.
Porcelain veneers are an indirect treatment in which tooth “covers” are made in a dental lab. Made of durable dental porcelain, these cosmetic devices are carefully designed to perfectly fit the smile. Bonded to teeth, porcelain veneers can cover stains, sizing abnormalities, odd shapes, even slight turning. With good care, these stain-resistant cosmetic sheaths can last up to 15 years.
What our patients have to say
“Best dental experience ever! Everyone is very personable and really care about you and your outcomes. I knew I had an issue, got there first thing in the morning, they fit me in and resolved my issues same day. I have total confidence in all that they do and that they have my best interest at heart. I’ll never go anywhere else for dental care.” – Michelle B.
One of the most popular cosmetic treatments in dentistry, teeth whitening offers fast and lasting improvement. Teeth naturally become discolored over time, absorbing tiny particles of foods and beverages. Teeth whitening is the process of gently lifting these particles out so that light can reflect properly off the enamel. Treatment may be conducted in the dental office for expedited results or at home.
In-office teeth whitening lifts the shade of teeth by several shades in a single visit. Some patients may need a following up in-office treatment to correct severe staining. Another option is to undergo in-office whitening before continuing improvement using our professional-grade whitening kit. Home whitening may be selected as the sole form of treatment. This protocol involves daily wear of custom-fit trays filled with a mild peroxide gel. It may take up to two weeks to achieve the maximum results from home whitening.
Artificial teeth set into an acrylic base have been used for years to replace missing teeth. At Sullivan Dental Center in St. Francisville, patients receive Precision-Fit Dentures, dental devices that are made using the most accurate measurements of the mouth, jawbone, and facial structure.
Precision-Fit Dentures don’t just replace teeth, they restore the natural, youthful appearance of your smile by following your unique anatomy. Though made to fit exceptionally well, dentures do sit on the gums. As such, they rely on fit and suction for stability. Some patients choose to enhance their tooth-replacement results by securing their dentures onto dental implants.
