What are Dental Implants?
Dental Implants are synthetic structures that are placed in the area of the tooth normally occupied by the root. Implants are anchored to the jawbone or metal framework on the bone and act as a foundation for an artificial tooth or permanent bridge. In some cases, implants can be used to attach dentures.
Implants are so well designed that they mimic the look and feel of natural teeth. Implants are usually made of a synthetic yet biocompatible material like metal or ceramic.
Who is a good candidate for Dental Implants?
Not everyone is a candidate for a dental implant, however. For a successful implant to take hold, a candidate must have the following:
- Proper bone density: We require our patients to have sufficient amount of bone to support the new dental implants.
- Good gums: Dental implants are connect to the gums within the patient’s mouth. Patient’s with gum disease or periodontal disease may not be ideal candidates for this procedure.
- Good oral health
- Strong immune system

Advantages of Dental Implants
There are many advantages associated with dental implants. Aside from allowing patients the opportunity to smile without being self-conscious, other advantages include the following:
- Look like natural teeth
- Fits securely and allows patients to chew normally
- Prevents decay in the jawbone that can accompany tooth loss
Dental Implant Procedure
Surgery is necessary to prepare the area for an implant and place the implant in the mouth. Following the procedure, we require a period of time for the implant to take hold and for bone tissue to build up and anchor the device. In some cases, our dentists will insert metal posts into the implant during a follow-up procedure to connect the tooth.
Because implants require surgery, we administer anesthesia to our patients and, if necessary, antibiotics to stave off infection following the procedure.
How Much Do Dental Implants Cost?
At Sullivan Dental Center we offer affordable dental implants for our patients. Since we are aware that each patient is unique, we determine a full price after a full dental evaluation. During this evaluation we determine whether a single implant will be necessary or possibly multiple implants.
How Long Do Dental Implants Last?
Like any restoration, implants require diligent oral hygiene and proper care to ensure they last a long time.
Risks of Dental Implants
Dental implant surgery is a relatively safe procedure. As with any other surgery, some risks may exist. These include complications from surgery such as excessive bleeding or reaction to anesthesia. Our dentists at Sullivan Dental Care will discuss the risks in greater detail prior to the surgery.
